Why plastic straws suck

These days I like to be the weirdo who takes her own paper straws to bars and restaurants.
Plastic straws are a menace. We don’t use them at home so why do we need them when we go places? Yet 500 million straws are used and discarded every day in the US with too many ending up as plastic pollution harming wildlife and the environment.
It’s hard because even when you ask for no straw at a bar or restaurant you often end up with one anyway as the server forgets or the message doesn’t filter on to whoever is preparing the drink or serving water to the table.
Now when I get presented with a drink with a plastic straw, I email them afterward to ask them to consider switching to paper straws or ditching them altogether.
I’ve also invested in stainless steel straws for smoothies at home. I bought my stainless steel straws from Norwex (complete with a little brush to clean them) and I’ve also seen them for sale at Target and on Amazon.
Plastic straws suck so tell your server you don’t want one! Or keep biodegradable/compostable ones in your purse like me 🙂
